I've been a long time buyer of 2K's annual NBA2K franchise and this is by far one of the better in the long time series. The 2K team had some issues to deal with when they released this game because of the NBA lockout, so, they focused on the historic aspect of the NBA which was very cool - and I don't just mean Magic, Jordan or Bird.
Seriously, you can go back in time with this game and play in the historic Boston Garden with Bill Russell - the camera is in black and white, they even go as far as to replicate the individual feel of each arena's camera work. For an example, the camera location in each NBA arena is different so you never get that same boring camera in every game - in Denver the camera is higher from the floor than in Atlanta, etc. They really focused on presentation as well this year. You'll notice the crowds being loud and into the games when the playoffs roll around, etc.
It's really a fantastic game all around - one of my favorites of the year.
-Improvements (over 2k11)
The main thing that bothers most people who buy games that are released yearly is the lack of improvements or fixing things that are clearly broken in previous versions. I really enjoyed 2k11 but was frustrated with amount of tweaking needed to make the game play realistically. With standard sliders there were far too many in traffic dunks, easily made 3s, and big men who could run the floor like gazelles with handles like Chris Paul. Now, in traffic dunks are reserved for only the best dunkers, contested threes rarely go, and big men can't become pseudo point guards. Also, there was this annoying bug in 2k11 when the ball was knocked loose it would accelerate away from your players. Humorous, but not too realistic.
-MyPlayer
My favorite mode where you develop from D-league scrub (who still gets 20 mpg) to Superstar. While I enjoyed the mode from 2k11, you had to play every game which while I played often, only made it through 2 or so seasons. Also, once you figured some things out (cherry picking, anticipating perimeter passes) you could average ridiculous amounts of easy fast break lay ups with little resistance from the computer. A+ teammate grades became routine and the game provided very little challenge once you got your speed/vertical/3pt/layup stats maxed. In 2k12, while still present, rarely do opposing cpu players just hand you the ball (occasionally Javale McGee, but that feels about right) and they do a better job of getting back to cover you when you try to cherry pick. You only have to play "key games" (which is about 40 or so a season) so you can actually get through a whole career.
-Association Mode
I loved this mode in 2k11 and still love it. Its gone largely unchanged though the draft is a little fancier. Player drafting is still a bit off, basically all players outside the top 20 are assured to be terrible, and 2nd rounders rarely stay in the league past their initial contracts. I'd love to see some more variety in potential that's not so easily scoutable. I understand it may add to frustration of not knowing who to draft, but I love realism. The gameplay/roster control feels largely unchanged but I love it.
I think the purchase was worth it for the mentioned upgrades and will continue patronizing 2k for their fantastic games. Hopefully they continue this excellence, never take their fans for granted *ahem* Madden (EA) *ahem*, and I'll continue to be happy donating my hard earned ~40 dollars a year to them.
First, of all I got it a couple of weeks ago and I'm already having technical issues. Lately its been bringing me to the start screen while it's loading. Also the connection to online is faulty and shuts down. Now the gameplay, as a first impression, I am so disappointed. It is completely different from the previous 2k games. What I dislike most is the controllability. The players on defense move so slow that it's pretty much pointless guarding the guy with the ball on user mode. Don't even get me started on playing against the CPU. The CPU is so hard and BS, its not enjoyable unlocking all the legend teams. Because of the change in difficulty to do anything, stats are way down. But then again, it could just take some time getting used to. I'm not going stop playing, since it's still addictive and a great basketball simulation, it's just not what I expected.
I'll be sure to update if I catch onto the new gameplay. PS name: Chaptopher
UPDATE:
So I've been playing a lot of 2K12 for about a month now and I have a few new things to say. My opinion stands that 12 is much harder on so many levels and incredibly annoying on many occasions. I don't think there's anyone who can play this game without ever saying "WTF!" and "BS!" There is constantly something that ticks you off when playing. Examples include constant stepping out of bounce, losing the ball by bumping into your own team mates, constantly bumping into defenders, the huge influence of consistency and slumps, and even some errors or gliches when playing (like getting points taken off in MyPlayer for something you did not do). Another thing that really can drive you crazy is the lengthy presentation and loading. Loading takes MUCH longer than 2k10 and 11, probably because the improved graphics.
Despite all these ARRRGGGGHHHs and UGGHHHHHs, 2K12 is a huge step up in basketball video games. The presentation is fresh and a breath of fresh air, compared to that of the lackluster predecessors. Each year 2K comes closer to the lifelike image of the players and the atmosphere. This year, there was a huge step in this area. With big change, I think 2K felt they had to revamp the way execution in the gameplay. Playing 2K10 and 11 now feels much easier, but not necessarily a good thing. 2K12 is much closer to lifelike movement.
Here's the goods and bads I have for 2K12:
GOOD
1. Improved Graphics
2. Features and Ad ons (new and improved)
3. MyPlayer improvements (no summer circuit though which I personally didn't like)
4. Addiction
5. Realistic gameplay (not overall gameplay)
6. Improved pass accuracy (to some degree)
BAD
1. Constant turnovers (especially from stepping out of bounce)
2. Annoying gameplay
3. Difficult CPU challenges
4. Consistency of shots and bricks
5. Ability of LBJ
6. Plays (a little difficult getting used to)
7. Pick and roll and pick and pop offense more complicated to control
8. Gamesliders need major adjustment in future 2K games

The only downfall was my boyfriend's disappointment when he realized that he had selected the wrong product (he wanted '13 not '12). I gave it to my younger cousin, and he enjoys it very much.
Overall its a good game.
